There There WHIS Literacy Program with Tommy Orange

On Monday, February 10th, students in Michael Beckett's 10th grade ELA course held their culminating activity at the Carnegie Lecture Hall for their immersive unit into Tommy Orange's Pulitzer Prize finalist novel There There.  Through a partnership with Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures,  WHHS was provided copies of the critically-renowned novel,  and through readings and discussions the students were introduced to a contemporary masterpiece.   The students were able to hear the author speak and respond to their questions about the novel.  Since 2016, the Woodland Hills Interaction Series has provided immersive literacy programs to our students.

PreSchool Logo WHHS Preschool Information: SPRING SESSION

The Woodland Hills High School offers a free preschool program through its Child Development Program.  Parents of children who are 3-5 years old and live within the Woodland Hills School District are invited to register their children.  The program is offered three days per week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for eight weeks for 2 separate sessions.

MLK Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards

An entry by senior Johnna Hill, a student in Mr. DeIuliis' Creative Writing class, was awarded Best of School in this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards competition. Johnna will be recognized at a ceremony held on Carnegie Mellon University's campus on Monday, January 20. CMU professor Jim Daniels visited Mr. Amato DeIuliis' creative writing class earlier this year to introduce the competition and encourage the students to use their experiences to write their entries.

Rachel Lippincott WHIS Welcomes Rachael Lippincott as 25th Guest

On Wednesday, October 23, the Woodland Hills Interaction Series hosted #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachael Lippincott - our 25th guest and 10th New York Times bestselling author in six years. Her book, Five Feet Apart, tells the story of teens with cystic fibrous. The book's film adaptation was released earlier this year. Ms. Lippincott shared insights about her life as a writer and advice for students pursuing careers in the humanities.

WHIS New York Times Bestselling Author Visits Woodland Hills

New York Times bestselling author Jewell Parker Rhodes spoke with students from the Woodland Hills Intermediate School and Woodland Hills High School.   The joint venture was produced as part of the Woodland Hills Interaction Series and provided by Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures.

Dr. Rhodes is a New York Times bestselling author. She has been awarded the American Book Award and the Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award. She is the author of Ghost Boys, Towers Falling, and the Louisiana Girls children’s book trilogy, which includes Ninth Ward, Sugar, and Bayou Magic. Dr. Rhodes is also the author of the memoir Porch Stories: A Grandmother’s Guide to Happiness.
