Dear Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy Families:

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. The entire Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy staff has missed each and every one of you!  We have been planning and preparing for the year throughout the last few months to ensure your child continues to learn and grow.  The teachers have been trained with Google Classroom and will be delivering instruction virtually.  We will be using the resources your child is familiar with and there will be face-to-face time with your child’s Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy teacher.  As we work with the children and families through the virtual learning platform we will support each other and be teammates in the children’s education.  The Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy family will continue to become stronger.  Below is some back to school information for you to review.

The 2020-2021 school year begins on Monday, August 24 for 1st through 5th grade onlyThe first day for Pre-K and Kindergarten students is Tuesday, August 25th.  Teachers will be preparing and presenting instruction from the school building, Monday through Friday, during the regular school day.  Virtual instruction begins officially at 9:00 AM for students with a morning homeroom virtual meeting where the day’s objectives will be explained.

Pre-K & Kindergarten Orientation

Pre-K and Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Friday, August 21st  for all Pre-K and Kindergarten students and their parents.  The Kindergarten Orientation starts virtually at 9:15 and a link will be sent to you to participate in the Orientation with your child.  The session will also be recorded for those who are unable to attend.

School Day

The platform for our virtual instruction will be Google Classroom.  Below is a sample schedule for your child.  This schedule allows for face-to-face time with the classroom teacher and also provides opportunity for whole group interaction, small group instruction, independent work and class time with the special area teachers.  It is imperative that your child is attending school every single day – whether that is as scheduled below or by using the recorded instruction.  All PA state laws regarding attendance applies to virtual learning (see parent-student handbook) and attendance will be recorded each day.

  • 9:00-9:15 Morning Meeting/Community Time (Google Meet)
  • 9:15-11:15 ELA Block
  • 11:15-12:30 Lunch and Prep
  • Teachers are off line for their lunch and prep.  Students can work on specials, eat lunch, take an exercise break, work on asynchronous assignments, etc.
  • 12:30-2:00 Math
  • 2:00-2:45 Science/Social Studies

Each subject block includes the lesson, independent work, and small group and includes recorded and live portions.

Chromebooks and Distribution Schedule

Every Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy student will receive a chrome book to participate in the virtual instruction.  Along with the technology, each student will receive the necessary grade level workbooks for reading, math, and science.  When you come to the school to pick up your Chromebook and materials you will also be provided with necessary school supplies.

The Student Handbook, which contains information regarding academics, student expectations, policies, services, the dress code, and specific guidelines for attendance procedures, etc. can be found on the Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy website. There is also an additional document that explains the expectations for participating in live virtual instruction. Teachers will review the expectations in more detail during their classes the first week of school.  It is the responsibility of every student to know and observe the rules, policies and regulations of the school and district.

The Chromebooks will be distributed the week of August 17, 2020.  Families will enter the building using Doors 1 & 2 (near the flagpole).  You will also receive your supplies at this time, so please be patient with us as we retrieve all of your materials.

School and Home Communications

Please log on to your Power School account to see your child’s homeroom assignment.  Teachers will maintain contact with parents/guardians regarding each student's academic progress and/or behavior.  Parents will also have access to their children’s grades through the on-line Power School program.  Communication between the school and home is essential to the success of all of our students and is a priority.   All communications are also posted on the Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy web page and Facebook page.

Social & Emotional Supports

We recognize that many students may be experiencing anxiety or fear about the current situation.  We want to make sure this does not interfere with their ability to learn and grow.  We have support and information about assistance for the needs of our students.  Please contact Ms. Bethany Smith, Home School Visitor at smitbe@whsd.net if you have any questions about supports or attendance.

Thank you for your support as we begin the 2020-2021 school year. Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy staff is committed to working with you and your child to ensure a positive learning experience until we are together again in the traditional classroom setting. Please contact me if you have any questions.
