Hi! My name is Michelle Sperduto.  I have been teaching 1st grade for 23 years.  I am a Woodland Hills alumni.  I received my Bachelor's degree from Clarion University in Elementary Education.   My Master's degree is from Duquesne University in Reading and Language Arts.

Welcome to First Grade!
My name is Miss Sperduto and I am your child’s first grade teacher. Please continue reading to learn more about what you and your child should expect this year.

Email- This will be the quickest way to reach me and receive feedback. I am able to check or respond to my email periodically throughout the day. Please consider this to be the best way to reach me.

Reading/Language Arts
Every week students will read and learn about a new story during their reading block. Throughout the week students will learn phonics, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, high frequency words, and story comprehension.   Students will be assessed on these skills every Friday with a spelling and story test. The spelling list will be sent home at the beginning of each week for students to study and practice at home. At the mid-point to the year a new item will be added to the story test, it will assess your child’s oral reading fluency. Children will be individually assessed on the number of words they can read in one minute. The minimum benchmark for January is 20 words per minute and the minimum benchmark for May is 40 words per minute. You can help your child excel and reach these benchmarks by having them read to you a few minutes each night.
Students will receive less frequent assessments in math. With the Common Core curriculum students will learn a variety of topics such as time, money, number relationships, measurement, fractions, addition and subtraction, place value, and geometric shapes. Students will be assessed at the end of each chapter. The daily math homework will help you and your child stay up-to-date on the current math topic.
Special Classes:
Students will enjoy a special area class each day. On computer days students will learn how to use and access different aspects of technology and work on a variety of activities that focus on the reading and math curriculum. Below is your child’s special class schedule.

*Please remember to have your child wear proper gym shoes on gym days.

Yield results by encouraging your child to do better.
