Sixth and seventh grade orchestras, choirs, and bands entertain during winter concert

Wednesday, December 17 was the final night of the WHSD Department of Music winter concert season, and it was time for the sixth and seventh graders at Dickson to show off their talents.

In front of a packed house, the sixth grade orchestra opened the show under the direction of Mr. Evan Reichenfeld. Each piece had a holiday theme, beginning with "St. Nick's Canon on the Housetop," arranged by Carrie Lane Gruselle. Brian Balmages' "A Celtic Christmas Fantasy" came next before the orchestra concluded its portion of the show with Tchaikovsky's "Russian Dance" from "The Nutcracker."

Ms. Katie Miller and the choir took the stage next, and Ms. Miller shared that the choir was eager to perform despite only working with her for a few weeks. They sang a "Christmas (Kazoo) Along" - minus the kazoos - and "Winter Fantasy" to bring some holiday vibes to the event.

The sixth grade band closed out the show under the direction of Mr. Kevin Varga, beginning with the classic "Carol of the Bells." They also performed "Jingle Bells! Samba Bells!" and closed out with "Fum, Fum, Fum."

After a brief intermission, it was time for the seventh grade portion of the evening. The orchestra took the stage under the direction of Mr. Reichenfeld with a selection of pieces that showed off their growth of musics. "Two Christmas Favorites" helped set the mood before the orchestra played the Puerto Rican carol "A La Media Noche." The group finished their performance with Larry Clark's "Out of Winter."

Mr. Reichenfeld brought the choir out next for renditions of "Season of Wonder, Season of Light" and "Listen to the Winter Wind." The choir concluded their set with Leonard Cohen's hit "Hallelujah," and they asked the audience to join in for the final two choruses.

The seventh grade band closed out the evening under the direction of Mr. Varga, beginning with "Bell Carol Rock," a modern twist on "Carol of the Bells." The band embarked on a "Dreidl Adventure" before wrapping up with Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite Petite."

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the students Wednesday night and the music department all throughout December!
