Woodland Hills robotics team places second in VEX V5 Robotics Competition

Woodland Hills High School hosted a VEX V5 Robotics Competition on Saturday, and Woody High team 41267A "Catalyze Robots" turned in their best performance of the year!

The team finished second in the individual skills competition and advanced all the way to the final of the alliance competition. Saturday marked the first time the team advanced beyond the first round of the elimination bracket.

Saturday's competition featured middle school and high school teams representing Attawheed Foundation, Carlynton High School, Chartiers Valley Middle School, Frazier High School, Keystone Oaks High School, Penn Hills High School, Penn Trafford High School, Sarah Heinz House, Shady Side Academy, Upper St. Clair High School, and Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

The "Push Back" variation of the VEX V5 Robotics Competition pits pairs of teams against each other in a series of randomized qualifying matches. They must work together in these unplanned alliances by scoring points by scoring goals, controlling territory, and finishing in a designated area, all within a two minute time period. They can block the other team from attempting to score points, as well. Teams have 15 seconds for an opening autonomous coding period to score initial points, and then have the remaining 1:45 to pilot their robot with a remote control.

Teams played 10 qualifying matches to determine an overall seeding. The top eight seeded teams then drafted their ally for the elimination round, challenging them to choose wisely to ensure that their partner complemented their skills.

Teams also competed individually in the skills competition, which challenged them to rack up as many points as possible in an allotted time.
