High school orchestra, bands kick off spring concert season

It's officially spring concert season in the Woodland Hills School District!

The WHSD Department of Music launched its series of student performances with the first of two high school performances on Tuesday night. The program featured the Woodland Hills High School orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Alicia Scaramuzzo, as well as the ninth grade band and the Woodland Hills High School concert band, both under the direction of Mr. Robert Carr.

The students performed pieces from a wide range of genres, including current pop music, famous film scores, and traditional classical pieces. The orchestra opened the evening with renditions of "K-Pop Caprice" by Jiyoung Um, "Bonus Level" by Doug Spata, and "Tanc Furioso" by Katie O'Hara LaBrie.

The ninth grade band performed the main theme from "The Incredibles" soundtrack by Michael Giacchino before shifting gears to "Our Kingsland Spring," which is the first movement from "Georgian Suite" by Samuel R. Hazo. Senior Sonny Davis conducted the band during the first piece. The ninth grade band concluded their performance with "Ocean Blue" by Adrian B. Sims.

The nautical theme continued as the concert band joined the ninth grade band for a spirited performance of highlights from the score to "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." Mr. Carr once again showcased his versatility by fending off a rogue pirate in a sword/baton battle during the performance. The concert band concluded the evening with highlights from the film "Ratatoullie" by Giacchino and the toe-tapping "Groovitude" by Randall D. Standridge.

During the concert band's performance, Mr. Carr recognized two seniors with the annual band awards. These traditional awards included one selected by Mr. Carr and one selected by students. Sonny Davis and Isaac Lott were the recipients of this year's awards.

Tuesday was just a taste of what's to come! Wednesday will bring the eighth grade concert to the high school, while Thursday will feature the second high school performance as the jazz band, chamber choir, and advanced choir take the stage. Next week will feature the combined elementary concert at Turtle Creek Elementary on Tuesday, May 19 and the 6th/7th grade concert at the high school on Wednesday, May 20.

Come out and support our student musicians!
