Jazz band, choirs highlight second high school spring concert

The auditorium was once again a happening place Thursday night, as the WHSD Department of Music spring music season rolled on with the second high school concert of the week.

Thursday's show featured the Percussion Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Jazz Band, and each brought something special to showcase their talents.

The Percussion Ensemble opened the evening, first with a duo performance featuring Cayden Bristow and Luke DeVore before shifting to David England's "Ragin' Creek Run."

Dr. Alicia Scaramuzzo and the Concert Choir took the stage next with a quartet of songs, beginning with Andy Beck's "Riversong" and "Greg Gilpin's "Vox." The choir time traveled back in time a bit for a beautiful rendition of Cyndi Lauper's 1984 hit "Time After Time" before finishing with "Shine Like Stars" by composer PinkZebra.

The Chamber Choir stepped onto the risers next and opened their set with the finger-snapping, hand-clapping spiritual "You Can't Step Twice." After a performance of "Apple Tree," the choir finished with a pair of popular songs written decades apart. Queen's iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody" was up first, while Jason Mraz's "93 Million Miles" left a few audience members - and choir members - with some misty eyes.

The Jazz Band finished out the evening with six songs, beginning with a lively rendition of Elton John's "I'm Still Standing." Leon Russell's "A Song For You" featured a solo by Isaac Lott on the tenor saxophone. The band performed two pieces by two 20th century icons - "Cotton Tail" by Duke Ellington, and "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder. After a performance of "Tampico," the band closed out the night with Arthur Hamilton's "Cry Me A River," which featured senior Livia Rocco on vocals.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the high school musicians and performers this week. Don't forget to join us on Tuesday at Turtle Creek Elementary for the combined fifth grade orchestra, choir, and band concert. The sixth and seventh grade orchestras, choirs, and bands will perform at the high school on Wednesday to wrap up the spring concert season.
